Hal Leonard Vocal Competition

Attention voice teachers and students! Hal Leonard is holding a vocal competition via YouTube. Students up to age 23 may enter in their age group and cash prizes will be awarded. Repertoire must be selected from the list provided and registration ends Feb. 11, 2011.

Summer is for garage sales

We all accumulate stuff. So what do we do when the stuff gets out of hand? We purge.

Right now at all four of our locations we are doing just that. We're selling those publications that have been taking up valuable real estate for too long and we're doing it at a loss. What's the deal? We're selling it by the pound. Yep, we've got scales at the ready and bins full of books just waiting to be snagged up.

They're not worth much to us and frankly, we're sick of looking at some of it. So, grab that can of change off your dresser and come dig through our bins. You never know what steal might be hiding in there!

Alfred PLAY Series

More and more customers are asking for methods with a DVD. The packaging for these products has made them slow sellers in the past, but thankfully that is changing. In most cases we are now able to look into the book that accompanies the DVD and see the content, whereas older products were sealed and the DVD was in a bulky plastic case. It is kind of hard to judge a method by the cover, as they say.

Alfred has a new series of guitar methods with DVD called the PLAY series. In this case the DVD is essential to the instruction. The book mainly consists of the musical material and little to no text. The DVD includes bonus DVD-ROM materials for both Windows and Mac. There is a chord dictionary, guitar tuner and a virtual fretboard which shows you exactly where your fingers need to be.

This series includes style specific books in Jazz, Blues, Acoustic, and Rock Guitar. Also offered are Bass Guitar, and Keyboard. Books for Voice are also on the horizon.

It's actually pretty cool. The Guitar Wheel has two sides, one specific to guitar and the other they call the Theory or Piano side. You simply select your key and tons of information about progressions, scales, inversions, and fingerings relating to the fretboard pop up. I could see this being very handy for composing as well as gigging. Their website has videos and instructions about how to get the most out of your Guitar Wheel.

New from FJH - Succeeding at the Piano

Helen Marlais' Succeeding at the Piano arrived in our stores this month. The series includes 3 books which are designed to work together; Lesson and Technique Book (with or without CD), Recital Book, and Theory and Activity Book. So far, only the Prep and Level 1 are available. In addition to the core books are flash cards, stickers and a Merry Christmas Book.
Dr. Marlais incorporates musicianship early in the method as well as intervals to develop good reading skills. Students are encouraged to assess themselves when new techniques are introduced.
The publication of this method has been much anticipated and we can't wait to hear what you think!

Yay for Faber!

Okay, this is definitely long awaited and exciting news. For over a year we have been without some favorite supplemental piano books from Randall and Nancy Faber. I'm talking about the Popular Repertoire books from their Piano Adventures series. Well folks, they're back! Since moving to Hal Leonard it seems all the copyright issues have been resolved and they have been reprinted and shipped out to retailers. Hooray!
What we're all REALLY waiting for is the PreTime to BigTime series, which Hal says is coming "very soon!" I have no time line for you, unfortunately, but I'll let you know when we hear!

Greetings! With our new website we're launching some new features for you, our friends. One of them being this blog which will provide information about new sheet music products arriving in our stores. Nearly every week we get new publications in. In the past we have displayed new items at the sales counter for a bit and then stocked them with a "new" tag sticking out the top. That's all well and good for customers who happen to stumble upon them in our bins. But we think we can do better than that.

On this blog we will provide full product descriptions, pictures, prices, and reviews.
